Kennel Cough and You

With the cold temperatures in our hemisphere, we tend to stay indoors, closer together. Same case with our dogs - and with it, a rise in general sicknesses. A very common malady for dogs is kennel cough - but what can you do about it? Kennel cough, or canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is a highly contagious respiratory illness in dogs. It spreads through airborne droplets, direct contact, or shared surfaces like water bowls and toys. While it’s usually not serious, it can be uncomfortable for your pup.

Signs of Kennel Cough

  • Persistent, dry cough – Often described as a “honking” sound

  • Gagging or retching – Sometimes mistaken for choking

  • Sneezing and runny nose

  • Lethargy – Your dog may seem more tired than usual

  • Loss of appetite – Less common but possible

  • Mild fever – Some dogs may run a slight temperature

What to Do If Your Dog Has Kennel Cough

  1. Isolate Your Dog – Since it’s highly contagious, keep them away from other dogs.

  2. Keep Them Comfortable – Avoid exposure to smoke, strong scents, or anything that may irritate their throat.

  3. Use a Humidifier – Moist air can help soothe their cough.

  4. Encourage Rest and Hydration – Make sure they drink water and rest as much as needed.

  5. Talk to Your Vet – Mild cases often resolve on their own in 1-2 weeks, but severe cases may require antibiotics or cough suppressants.

  6. Prevent Future Cases – Consider getting your dog vaccinated, especially if they frequently interact with other dogs at daycare or boarding facilities.

If your dog shows signs of difficulty breathing, extreme lethargy, or worsening symptoms, see your vet immediately. Otherwise, with a little care and patience, your pup should be back to normal in no time!
